Vaccines

Vaccines for Hajj and Umrah

Everyone should be up to date with their routine UK vaccines, including MMR and the diphtheria, tetanus and polio booster. On top of that, the official UK advice for Hajj and Umrah is:

Many vaccines need more than one dose, so the total depends on the course you need. Your pharmacist will confirm it before you go ahead. Some travel vaccines, such as hepatitis A and typhoid, may also be free from your GP.

Your meningitis ACWY certificate

Saudi Arabia requires proof of meningitis ACWY vaccination from all pilgrims aged 1 and over. You need the conjugate vaccine, given at least 10 days before you arrive and within the last 5 years. Your record must show your full name, the vaccine name and type, and the official stamp of the pharmacy or clinic. We provide this at your appointment.

The Saudi authorities also recommend a flu jab before you travel. If you’re not eligible on the NHS, our private flu jab is £25.

Yellow fever

Saudi Arabia only asks for a yellow fever certificate if you’re arriving from, or have spent more than 12 hours in an airport in, a country with yellow fever risk. A polio vaccine is only required if you travel via a country affected by polio. Neither applies to direct flights from the UK.

Malaria

There’s no malaria in Makkah, Medina, Jeddah, Riyadh or Ta’if. Travelling on to the south-west of the country? Ask us for advice.
