Who needs a yellow fever vaccine?
Yellow fever is a serious viral infection spread by mosquitoes in parts of Africa and Central and South America. You may need the vaccine if:
- you’re travelling to an area where there’s a risk of yellow fever, or
- a country on your trip asks for a yellow fever certificate to let you in. Some ask every traveller, others only people arriving from a risk country.
We’ll check your whole itinerary at your appointment, including any stopovers. You can also look up each country on TravelHealthPro.
Your certificate
We issue your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) at your appointment. It becomes valid 10 days after vaccination and, for most people, lasts for life.
Keep it with your passport. You may be asked to show it when you arrive, and travellers without one can be refused entry or vaccinated at the border.
Is the vaccine suitable for me?
The yellow fever vaccine is a live vaccine, so it isn’t suitable for everyone. Our pharmacist will go through your medical history before vaccinating. Please tell us if you:
- have a weakened immune system, or take medicines that affect it
- are pregnant or breastfeeding
- have had a severe allergic reaction to eggs or to a previous vaccine
- have had problems with your thymus gland
- are aged 60 or over. You can usually still have it, but we’ll talk you through the small extra risk of side effects
- are booking for a baby under 9 months old
If the vaccine isn’t suitable for you, we’ll talk you through your options.
Common questions
How much does the yellow fever vaccine cost?
£80, including your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP).
How long before I travel should I have it?
At least 10 days before you arrive in a country that needs the certificate, because that’s when it becomes valid. If you need other vaccines too, book 6–8 weeks ahead if you can.
I’ve had it before. Do I need it again?
For most people one dose gives lifelong protection, and certificates are now valid for life. A few people, for example those who were pregnant or had a weakened immune system when vaccinated, may need another dose. We’ll advise you.
What if I can’t have the vaccine for medical reasons?
A registered centre can consider a medical letter of exemption. Some countries may still refuse entry without a certificate, so please speak to us before you book your trip.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Your travel itinerary, any previous vaccination records or certificates, and a list of any medicines you take.
